Any dental procedure involves recovery, and patients may experience some pain. How Can I Sooth Severe Pain During the Recovery Period?

Once the local anesthetic wears off after your root canal procedure, you may have mild pain or sensitivity. The pain should only last a few days. If you experience severe pain, or think you may have a complication, we encourage you to come back to be seen right away.

Over the counter medications are usually recommended to help with pain during healing. Our staff will discuss at-home care, and we recommend a soft food diet after your root canal. Once you have recovered you can resume eating normally.

Tips to Soothe Pain During Recovery

In addition to over-the-counter pain medication there are some things patients can do at home to help sooth their pain during recovery.

Use an ice pack for immediate pain relief on your jaw near the tooth. This can also help with inflammation.
Patients can gargle with salt water a few times a day to help soothe pain.
Cucumbers placed on the area in your mouth can help the pain and feel refreshing.
Olive oil on a cotton ball placed on the area in your mouth can help reduce pain.
You can mix salt and pepper with a little water to form a paste. Applying this to the area can help sooth pain. Salt and pepper have anti-inflammatory properties.

If pain persists and does not improve after a few days we recommend contacting our office. We will have you come in as soon as possible to examine the area, and check for complications such as infection. Most patients recover normally and complications are rare.

What Should I Check for When Choosing My Dental Insurance?

Is It Safe to Get Oral Surgery if I’m Pregnant?

One of the most common questions asked is if oral surgery is safe during pregnancy. Naturally patients are concerned about the health of their baby and do not want to risk anything during pregnancy. This is a good question, and always something to discuss should you need oral surgery and you are pregnant.

Typically oral surgery is not recommended when a patient is pregnant, and we feel protecting your child’s health is extremely important. With pregnant patients we avoid general anesthetic as well as sedation, and will only use local anesthetic. A recent study in 2015 by the American Dental Association found that local anesthetics do not harm an unborn child’s health.

Does It Matter What Trimester I Am In?

Another factor we consider is how far along the patient is with their pregnancy. Usually first and second trimesters are safe for oral surgery that does not require the patient to be sedated. We avoid any procedures during the third trimester because any surgery when pregnant is risky during this period.

If you are in need or oral surgery our team works closely with you to determine what is really medically necessary, and we recommend postponing the procedure until after the baby is born.

Should Oral Surgery Be Done Before Pregnancy?

We always recommend if a patient is actively trying to get pregnant, they should visit our office to ensure you have no issues. This way we know if any issues need attention right away, and what can wait until after the baby is born. We encourage our patients to always take care of any oral surgery as soon as possible, so you do not have to worry during your pregnancy.

Should Oral Surgery Be Postponed Until After Child Birth?

If you are in need of oral surgery and are pregnant we always recommend waiting until after child birth. The only time oral surgery is recommended is when the mother’s health is in danger. During the third trimester we always avoid any surgeries and take every possible precaution. You and your child’s life and health is our priority. Most oral surgeries can be postponed, and there is typically no immediate need to perform surgery during pregnancy.

We recommend patients always come in for their regular exam and cleaning even during pregnancy so we can make sure all looks and feels great. During your exam we may use x-rays to take a closer look in your mouth and jaw. X-rays are safe for pregnant patients, and are at a low radiation level where there is no risk of harm to a developing baby. During any x-rays we ask our patients to wear a shield, and this provides an extra level of protection.

An underbite is a condition where the lower teeth extend out farther than the upper teeth. Some feel like this resembles a bulldog and many are self-conscious about their smile. Unfortunately, there are no devices that can cover an underbite. Underbite cases can be mild or severe, and the good news is this condition is treatable. Severe cases may cause oral health problems such as problems eating, speaking, or moving the jaw. If you have an underbite it is always important to contact a professional for help.

What Causes an Underbite?

Many things may cause an underbite where your teeth do not align properly. During childhood, many kids use their tongues to push on their teeth, use a pacifier, or suck their thumb. All of these habits can cause the teeth to misalign. In most cases an underbite is genetic, and another person in the family also has an underbite. Other reasons could include an injury, tumor, or a defect such as a cleft lip or palate.

What Treatments Are Available for an Underbite?

How Long Do Stitches Last After Oral Surgery?

If you recently had oral surgery and are recovering, or just found out you need oral surgery, you may wonder how the healing process will go. Many ask how long the stitches will last after the procedure. Whether you had a tooth extracted, or have had another type of oral surgery, taking care of yourself after recovery and following the post-procedure instructions is important.

What Can I Expect After My Oral Surgery?

After any oral surgery, you will notice swelling or inflammation around the mouth or area involved in the procedure. This is normal and will last 3-4 days after the surgery. After this time the swelling should subside. Stitches are a big concern to patients, and many do not realize the stitches are typically dissolvable. Most sutures will dissolve or fall out on their own after 2-7 days.

Depending on the procedure and the number of stitches required will determine how long they will take to dissolve. Different types of sutures may take up to two weeks or more to dissolve. Before you begin your surgery, our team will discuss what your procedure requires, and what you can expect during recovery. Our team will review what type of suture is required for your procedure, and let you know how long you can expect the stitches to last.

What Other Things Should I Watch Out for During Recovery?

After any oral surgery, you may also notice some bleeding around the area. This should subside after 48-72 hours. We recommend using gauze with pressure to help stop the bleeding, and repeat as the bleeding continues. If the bleeding does not subside after 72 hours, or you have prolonged pain we encourage you to contact our office right away. If pain medications are prescribed, patients should make sure to take their medication as directed to help with the recovery. Nausea is common after anesthesia, and if you start to feel nauseous, please try eating. If eating does not help along with the medication you are taking, please call our office.

Does Medicare Cover Oral Surgery?

Medicare is a common dental coverage option for many patients and may cover oral surgery if the surgery is medically necessary. Surgeries that are medically necessary help to treat a condition, disease, or injury. If your surgery is for cosmetic reasons Medicare typically does not cover this type of procedure. What About Wisdom Teeth Surgery or a Tooth Removal?

If you require a tooth to be extracted, or you need wisdom tooth surgery, Medicare will cover both of these items if the surgery is medically necessary. Otherwise, an alternative insurance plan must be used that includes dental coverage for tooth extractions.

If you require oral surgery this type of procedure is typically outpatient. In order to receive coverage, you must enroll in Medicare Part B. Medicare Part B has an annual deductible of $198 per year before oral surgery costs will be covered. Typically, patients are responsible for 20 percent of the approved surgery. Medicare Advantage plans may cover routine procedures and oral surgery.

Removing impacted wisdom teeth is a little more involved compared to a simple tooth extraction for an erupted tooth. Taking care of yourself after surgery is very important. Our team at Jesse Lanzon DMD MD will discuss how to care for your mouth at home after your wisdom tooth removal, and give you post-operative care tips to keep you feeling great.

What To Expect After My Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Bleeding and Swelling

Many wonder why they feel nauseous after their wisdom tooth removal surgery, and do not know what to expect. After your surgery you may experience some bleeding or oozing and this is very common. We recommend you rinse gently or wipe the blood away. You can use gauze pads provided to help stop the bleeding. You may also experience some swelling around the cheeks or area where the teeth were removed. Ice can be used to help minimize swelling, and should subside after a few days.

Pain and Diet

After your wisdom tooth removal procedure, you may experience some pain. Patients may be prescribed pain medication or antibiotics after their surgery, or we may recommend over the counter pain medication. The pain should subside after a few days, but if you have any persistent pain that does not go away, we recommend calling our office right away.

Following a soft food diet is recommended after wisdom tooth removal while your mouth is healing. Patients should avoid straws and any sucking motions during recovery. Patients should eat balanced meals and stay hydrated.

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea and vomiting are common after wisdom tooth removal. In some cases, patients feel nauseous after anesthesia. To help your nausea you can sip coke or ginger ale to help the feeling subside. Typically, nausea should go away after 4-6 hours. If your nausea does not go away, we recommend calling our office. In some cases, patients can feel nauseous 2-4 days after their surgery. This is due to pain medication, or can be caused by dehydration.

What Are Other Complications?

Most patients recover easily, but if you experience any fever or feel dizzy, we encourage you to contact our office right away. Patients may feel stiff after their procedure or have a sore throat. This should also subside, but if these symptoms do not go away, we recommend contacting our office.

Taking Care of your teeth after surgery is important. Patients should still brush and floss gently after having their wisdom teeth removed. If you experience any prolonged pain, this should be addressed right away, and we recommend calling our office.
