Extractions

Whether you need to get wisdom teeth taken out or have a routine extraction, we will be with you every step of the way. Our Lompoc office specializes in making extractions as pain-free as possible. When a tooth has become broken or damaged we will first see if it can be repaired with a crown or filling; if the tooth is unable to be repaired then it will need to be extracted.

Tooth extraction can also be needed for a variety of other reasons:

  • When baby teeth do not fall out in a timely manner they need to be extracted to allow room for the permanent teeth to come in.
  • Some patients who are getting braces may need to have teeth extracted to allow for the remaining teeth to have room to shift.
  • Wisdom teeth are most commonly extracted to prevent them from becoming impacted. Once they are impacted your gums can become irritated and painful.

When a tooth is extracted it is fully removed from the socket in the jawbone. During your consultation we will take x-rays of the tooth that we will use to determine the best way to extract it. It is also important during this consultation to go over any medications you are currently taking, or if you are going to be starting bisphosphonates. Please do not smoke the day or surgery as this can increase your risk of developing a dry socket. During an extraction a local anesthetic is used, and a small incision is made into your gum and the tooth is removed.

Once your procedure is over it is important to have a friend, or family member, drive you home. We will go over your recovery instructions along with making a follow-up appointment. We will also advise you on safe pain medication if you are uncomfortable after the procedure. It is important to eat cool and soft foods for a few days following your procedure. To ensure that the blood clot is not disturbed please refrain from smoking, spitting, or using a straw.
